Anxiety is a negotiator, and it opens with something small.
Skip the party this once. Take the long way so you don’t cross the bridge. Run the checks one more time before bed.
Then the party becomes every party, the bridge becomes the highway, and the list of things you used to enjoy gets shorter every year.

Every check buys you about ten minutes of relief, and then the price goes up again.
Your body has been on duty so long that sitting still now feels like a job you’re doing badly.
Sleep breaks around two in the morning and hands you back the entire day you just finished.
By afternoon, your energy is spent on threats that never showed up, and the people closest to you catch whatever irritability is left.
Together, we’ll go after the events your anxiety still feeds on, using EMDR: you hold the memory in mind while your attention moves back and forth in a steady rhythm.
The charge drains out of the memory, and the belief riding on it, the one that keeps ordering you to check, loses its authority.
We’ll also build an image you choose yourself, one your body reads as steady, so you have something solid to return to when the alarm starts up.

Our sessions can’t be the only attention your nervous system gets, so you’ll go into the week with something specific to run.
You’ll learn tapping, a short sequence you run with your own fingers, quick enough that you’ll actually use it in a parking lot.
Mindfulness practice and targeted journaling give the two-in-the-morning rumination somewhere to go besides another lap around your head.
The goal is to put you in charge of what happens after an uncomfortable feeling arrives, not to promise you a life without one.
The list starts running the other direction: you go to the thing, you stay through dinner, and the bridge turns back into a bridge.
Anxiety still turns up now and then, and it turns out to be something you’re having rather than something you are.
You’ll know that from the inside, on an ordinary Tuesday, which is the only place that kind of knowing ever counts.
