Depression

Your Last Therapist Listened. The Depression Stayed.

You’ve told the story already, to someone who listened well.

Being understood felt like progress for about a week.

Then the flatness came back, and deciding anything still costs you more than it should.

By now, you’re wondering whether therapy just doesn’t work on someone like you.

The Blame Turns Toward You Next

Somewhere in there, the story changes, and the depression starts to look like a personal failure.

You should be able to snap out of it, or so the thinking goes.

So you say less about it, see fewer people, and settle into the certainty that nothing is ever going to change.

What’s happening is that you’ve been working against yourself without knowing it.

Why Being Understood Never Moved Your Depression

Understanding a problem and clearing it are two separate operations.

By the time people reach me, they’ve usually worked through a long line of therapists, sometimes seven or more.

Every one of them understood.

EMDR Reaches What Your Last Therapist Couldn’t

The hurtful events you’ve lived through installed a belief about who you are, and that belief keeps running underneath every conversation about it.

Naming it out loud doesn’t uninstall it.

I won’t sit across from you reflecting your own sentences back for a year.

With EMDR, we go after the events that installed the belief and clear the charge still attached to them.

You’ll Have Work to Do, and It Won’t Be Quick

You’ll get things to do between sessions, too:

Tapping, nervous-system work from polyvagal practice, and mindfulness you can use on a bad afternoon.

This takes more than 15 sessions, often six months to a year.

I’ll tell you that on the first call instead of the tenth.

You’ll Know It’s Working Before It’s Finished

The people I work with put the difference plainly: we don’t just talk; we get somewhere.

The anxiety that runs alongside your depression quiets down with it.

Decisions stop taking three days of circling.

And you say what you feel and what you need out loud, to the people who need to hear it.

Then Your Energy Starts Coming Back

One of the things I’ll have you do is go out into nature with a camera, a notebook, and a single instruction: receive pictures, don’t take pictures.

It sounds small.

It’s also where people catch themselves noticing the light on the water, then wanting to stay out a little longer.

Your voice comes back with your energy, and the life you rebuild can carry meaning, enjoyment, and satisfaction.

Take Your Own Pain Seriously Enough to Call

Reaching out after the last few therapists didn’t get anywhere takes more nerve than reaching out the first time.

Choosing therapy is a courageous decision, and it means your pain counts.
